In Tanzania, accommodation ranges from luxury safari lodges, tented camps and beach resorts to luxury hotels with full amenities and entertainment facilities to seedy local hotels with simple beds and shared bathrooms for $10 a night. Camping in parks is also popular, which significantly reduces the cost of an organised safari. In Tanzania, accommodation is rated with stars, although this system does not reach the level of the USA or Europe. In general, four- and five-star hotels are of a good standard. There are also first-class, luxurious and intimate accommodations in parks or on the beach.

If you stay in hotels with three stars or more, you’ll find clean rooms, private bathrooms with showers, swimming pools and one or more good restaurants. At the lower end of the scale, simple accommodation is available in one- or two-star hotels in the towns, which are mainly used by locals. Travellers on a budget should check that the room has clean linen and that the water supply is working before checking in.
